Waste services

Overview

Cover med res.jpg

We provide waste and recycling collection services to all Blacktown City residents.

Our Waste Management Service Charter below, outlines the full range of waste and recycling services that we provide. This will give you a clearer understanding of these services so you can use them appropriately.

The Charter also outlines our responsibilities in delivering waste management services to you and the service standards that you can expect.

Waste bin (red lid)

Your waste bin is collected weekly. It is for your household waste and items that are non-hazardous or can't be recycled.

Acceptable items:

  • nappies and sanitary items
  • food and garden waste
  • non-recyclable plastics such as soft plastics and toothpaste tubes
  • general rubbish
  • pet waste
  • broken glass.

Unacceptable items:

  • building materials, rocks, concrete, or soil
  • chemicals
  • car parts, electronics, and batteries
  • gas containers
  • needles and sharps
  • materials that can be recycled (place in your yellow lid recycling bin).

To find out how to safely dispose of these items, check our B informed app.

Did you know?

You can save over $130 by minimising your waste.  We offer a reduction in fees for domestic waste services to property owners who choose to use a smaller 140 litre waste bin. You can organise for your bin to be swapped by phoning 5300 6000.

Safety first: Due to the size and shape of the garbage and recycling trucks, drivers have blind spots (areas hidden from view). Please supervise children at all times when trucks are nearby.

Quick tips to improve waste management in units

Outcome

Action

Clean and tidy waste room

Move full bins to the back of the bin room and bring empty bins forward for easy access. Having empty bins easily available prevents overflowing and rubbish being placed on the floor.

Clean and tidy waste room

Check waste rooms frequently to ensure you have the correct number of bins and they’re in good condition. Contact Council to replace damaged or missing bins.

Install signage to help residents correctly use waste equipment and facilities. Posters and signs can be downloaded from relevant tab below or contact Council to pick up hard copies.

Avoid wrong items placed in yellow bin

Place yellow lidded recycling bins further into the room, towards the back. Check bins frequently and move contaminated items to the red lidded rubbish bin.

Clean and tidy kerbside

Send frequent reminders to residents about booking clean-ups and outline the terms and conditions of collection. Having a dedicated spot for clean up collections helps minimise illegal dumping.

Stay informed

Engage with us, we are always running innovative projects or designing educational material to help residential waste management.

Bin services and collection frequencies

The number of bins required for a residential development are allocated during the development application phase. This ensures the development can accommodate the waste generated by the residents and can hold the correct number of bins required.

The size of the bins affects how the waste is collected from residential developments. Bins are allocated as 240, 660 or 1,100 litre wheelie bins, depending on the size and layout of the development.

Beatifying waste rooms using art

We completed a project that compared key indicators that define the condition of waste rooms.

Waste room cleanliness and use improved by beautifying the space with art from the 2024 Blacktown City Young Artist Competition.

Beautifying and keeping waste rooms tidy promotes correct use of waste equipment and facilities

Waste room audits can improve your waste room.

What do we do in a waste room audit:

  • Check and replace damaged or missing bins.
  • Ensure there are enough bins, based on generation rates.
  • Asses bin contamination and provide education to residents.
  • Install education posters, bin stickers and placement decals.
  • Identify design opportunities and provide feedback to owners.
