New plots and columbarium niches

We are pleased to announce that sections 6, 7, 8 and 9 of St Bartholomew’s Cemetery are now open for operation. 370 new burial plots and 720 new columbarium wall niches have been made available for purchase for the first time since 1972.

The cemetery now features:

• A ‘lawn style’ burial area (Sections 8 and 9)

• A further 'lawn style' burial area (Section 10) to be released in future

• Newly released burial space in Section 6

• Columbarium walls for ash interments (Section 7)

• Terraced area, on the hill, providing steps and ramps as a means of improving access

• A new internal road and parking 

About St Bartholomew's Cemetery

St Bartholomew’s Church and Cemetery is located south of Ponds Road, Prospect. Built in 1841, St Bartholomew’s was the first church in Prospect with many historically significant residents who are buried at the site. For further information visit our Blacktown Memories page. 

St Bartholomew’s Cemetery and Church is an item of State Heritage significance. It remains a dominant landmark in the surrounding landscape due to its prominent siting, design and mature tree plantings. 

New Interment Rights can currently be purchased in St Bartholomew's Section 6, 7, 8 and 9. 

Interments (burials or ashes) in Sections 1-5 are only permitted with evidence of ownership of an existing Interment Right (which would have been issued prior to 1972).

How to purchase an interment right?

A person can be an interment right holder for up to 2 plots and each plot can have up to 2 interment right holders.

All new interment right holders are allocated plots according to what is next available.

In order to commence the application process, please submit an Application to Purchase an Interment Right(PDF, 239KB) with a copy of photo ID for all applicants.

The application may be submitted to Council electronically via email to cemeteries@blacktown.nsw.gov.au.

How to organise a burial?

Burial arrangements can be made by submitting a completed Notice of Interment for Burial Sites(PDF, 234KB) application with the assistance of your chosen Funeral Director. The administration fee for this application includes general cemetery maintenance and permit. The application form requires supporting documentation and finalised payments in order for burials to proceed.

Additional fees apply for burials which take place on weekends or public holidays. The Notice of Interment application does not include grave digging fees or funeral arrangements. Please consult your chosen Funeral Director to access these services.

For interments of ashes in columbarium walls, please submit a completed application for Notice of Interment for Memorial Gardens or Walls(PDF, 219KB).(PDF, 219KB) This application involves the ordering of a plaque. 

How to organise a headstone or memorial?

Applications to erect a headstone or memorial can be submitted with the assistance of your chosen stonemason. Applications can only be authorised by the Interment Right holder/s or their appointed representative (evidence required).

As all memorials must be constructed in accordance with the Australia Standard AS 4204 -2019, a licenced stonemason is required to conduct the works.

Graves in Section 7 are subject only to strict set of specifications for headstones. Once you have settled on a design and stonemason, submit Application to Erect a Memorial(PDF, 236KB) to Council. Fees apply.

How to cancel a perpetual interment right

You may submit an Application to Cancel an Interment Right(PDF, 212KB), which will refund 90% of the original purchase price. To apply, submit a completed application along with the original certificate of interment right provided to you at the time of purchase, supporting documentation and photo ID.

How to transfer a perpetual interment right

Interment right(s) may be transferred to an immediate family member of the holder(s) but cannot on be sold to third parties.  To apply, submit an Application to Transfer an Interment Right(PDF, 252KB) along with the original ownership certificate/receipt, photo ID and supporting information. Fees apply.

Credit card payments can be made via online payment portal or through Customer Service in Council’s Civic Centre. Credit card surcharges apply. Cash payments can also be arranged to be made at Customer Service in Council’s Civic Centre during business hours.

Operating hours and access

The cemetery is open to the public 365 days a year from 7.30 am to 6 pm (7.30 pm during daylight savings time). 

Maintenance and repair of gravesites

The holder of the interment right is responsible for maintenance and repair of their individual gravesite/s. Glass or other items that we deem to be a safety hazard are not permitted and if necessary, will be removed.

Council will regularly check all new graves and as required organise for site to be topped up during the post burial settlement period. This natural process of settlement can take between 12 to 18 months.
