What can I do?

Join a Streamwatch group

Streamwatch is a citizen science water monitoring program that enables community groups to monitor the quality and health of local waterways. It started in 1990, and to date there have more than 1,100 Streamwatch groups at over 1,060 sites across Sydney Water’s area of operation.

Streamwatch allows us to closely monitor waterway health so we can act as soon as possible when water quality starts to decline. It’s also a great way to empower our community to make a difference in protecting our waterways.

Blacktown has 2 Streamwatch sites which are run by schools:

1.  Breakfast Creek, Harvey Park

2.  Middle Lalor Creek, Twin Gums Reserve

Primary School Excursions

Brewongle Environmental Education Centre, in partnership with Blacktown City Council offers geography excursions to Blacktown Showground for local stage 2 and stage 3 students to learn about stormwater and how we can protect our waterways.

A virtual excursion for stage 2 students has been developed and you can find it here.

High School Stormwater Teaching Resource

Sustainable Schools NSW, in partnership with Blacktown City Council has developed a stormwater teaching resource for local stage 4 students.

This resource is aligned with Stage 4: Humanities and social sciences/geography, science, mathematics and English K-10 Australian and NSW syllabuses as well as cross curriculum priorities. It’s designed to help teachers achieve this while providing flexibility so teachers can use it for a single lesson or for an entire unit.

Blacktown City Council produces an annual Waterway health report card which complements the high school stormwater lesson package.
