Tree management

Tree Maintenance.jpg

Trees play an important role in the ‘greening’ of our city. They make our surroundings pleasant, provide relief from summer heat and reduce glare from pavement. They also increase the value of real estate, reduce stormwater runoff and improve the quality of the air we breathe.

It is important to carefully manage this precious resource and to preserve the existing urban forest within our City.

Before you prune or remove a tree from your residential or business property you may be required to apply for permission from us.

Blacktown City Council Street Tree Master Plan strategy

Blacktown’s Street Trees play an essential role in our urban areas. They are the front line of defence against urban heat and provide many important ecosystem benefits such as protection against floods and water pollution; they filter the air and remove fine particulates not to mention produce oxygen and provide habitat for fauna. The number of trees and extent of these benefits can be assessed by measuring a City’s canopy cover. Blacktown currently have some of the lowest urban canopy coverage in NSW, with just under 20.2% total canopy, and some of the highest urban heat in all of NSW.

Blacktown City Council is developing a Street Tree Master Plan to deal with this and to increase canopy on our streets, this will define how Council manages its street trees and how we will select the right tree for the right location. To support the development of the Street Tree Master Plan, we need our community's help to ensure their opinions and insights are considered so that Council can deliver a plan that provides maximum benefits to all.
