Supporting sustainable solutions is a program that provides information, education and incentives to help our community make the switch to reusable products.
Some of the biggest problem products that we are hoping to reduce the amount of in our bins include:
- food and garden waste
- disposable nappies
- disposable sanitary products
- disposable continence management products
- single use plastic bottles
- single use coffee pods
- disposable household batteries.
Through this program you will be able to learn all about the alternative options and if you decide to make the switch to reusables you can even apply for rebates for your purchase.
On average, more than half of the material found in our red lidded garbage are food, garden and paper waste and could be put into a compost bin, worm farm or other organics recycling system. To help our community make the switch we will continue running workshops and providing rebates to help with turning their organic waste into products that can be used at home.
Workshops
We run monthly composting and worm farming workshops where we introduce fantastic organics recycling systems and show you the tips and tricks to start and maintain them. If you are interested in joining one of these workshops please register through our Eventbrite page here: Blacktown City Council Bookable.
Rebates
To support our community starting an organics recycling system, we are providing a rebate for the purchase of one of these systems including:
- compost bin
- worm farm
- bokashi bin
- food digestor
- pet poo composter
- mulcher.
What is the rebate?
We will provide a household with two rebates of up to $50 for the separate purchases of an approved organics recycling system made within 3 months of your application.
How many items can I claim?
Each household may only claim two at home organics rebates and each rebate can be claimed against separate purchases. The quantity of rebates does not reset and are for the life of the household.
How do I apply for a rebate?
Read over the terms and conditions found on the tab below. When ready to apply click on the rebate application form tab and complete the details, remembering to upload your receipt when asked.
Your application will be assessed and if approved a cheque will be sent. These cheque runs are done once a month so please give some time for the process to occur.

Disposable nappies are a large part of our waste stream, making up approximately 9% of all the waste generated by households in Blacktown City. Not only do they increase your waste generation at home but because of the materials used to make them they also last in the environment for a very long time.
The solution? Cloth nappies. They provide great sustainability benefits through being reused multiple times, even across multiple children and at end of life can be repurposed.
Want more information on cloth nappies? Check out the frequently asked questions video below from Nappy Lane.
Workshops
We will be running a series of workshops to help our community switch to cloth nappies. These workshops will show how they work, give some handy tips about cleaning and maintenance as well as busting some of the biggest myths or concerns with cloth nappy use.

The easy access and simple nature of these machines make them a common choice but also means more waste is created that can't be recycled in your yellow lid recycling bin.
