Our Disability Inclusion Action Plan(PDF, 34MB) outlines our commitment towards accessibility for all, ensuring residents of all ages, backgrounds and abilities have fair and equal access to the facilities, programs, services and information that we provide to the community. As our area grows and changes, we want to make sure that our City is inclusive and accessible for everyone who lives, works and visits here.
This plan was developed in collaboration with local stakeholders and partners as well as the wider community. Community engagement included workshops with Council’s Access Advisory Committee and the Blacktown Disability Interagency as well as easy read surveys distributed through local service providers.
This plan outlines the actions that we will take over the next 4 years to remove barriers and improve access for people with disability so they can participate in all areas of community life. This plan aligns with the objectives of Our Blacktown 2041, which outlines our community’s vision and aspirations for the future of their City, including being ‘a vibrant and inclusive community where everyone can achieve their potential’.
This plan includes 4 focus areas which have been nominated by people with disability as being important to creating an inclusive community (NSW Disability Inclusion Action Plan Guidelines for Local Government). Each focus area includes a number of actions we will deliver, some in collaboration with service providers, local businesses or other government agencies. The focus areas are:
-
encouraging positive community attitudes and behaviours
-
creating liveable communities
-
supporting access to meaningful employment
-
improving access to services through better systems and processes.
Importantly, we recognise that we all have a role to play in creating positive change and breaking down barriers. This plan identifies opportunities for us to continue to work in partnership with service providers, local businesses and community members to support disability inclusion.
