Summary demographics

  • In 2021, there were 21,030 people with a need for assistance living in Blacktown City Council. (5.1% requiring help with day-to-day activities).

  • From 2016 to 2021, Blacktown City's population needing assistance increased by 3,752 people (21.7%). This represents an average annual population change of 4.01% per year over the period.

  • Interestingly, while females (11,163) outnumber males (9,867) seeking help, females experience a lower need for assistance earlier in life. This could be because women live longer.

  • Overall, 13.1% of the population needing assistance was aged between 0 and 14, and 49.2% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 9.6% and 57.3% respectively for Greater Sydney.

  • For every age group, up until 75+, people in Blacktown City require assistance at a rate higher than the numbers for Greater Sydney.

  • Nearly 1 in 10 residents (9.9%) provided unpaid assistance in 2021, slightly higher than the NSW average.

Caring for people with disability

  • 30,244 residents provide unpaid care in Blacktown

  • females are more likely to provide unpaid care than males: 11.5% vs. 8.2% in 2021

  • the total number of people providing unpaid care increased since 2016

  • this increase was primarily driven by more females taking on this role (+2,776), compared to a smaller increase for males (+332).
