Knit Bomb Project
Stronger together, stitched with care
The Blacktown City Knit Bomb Project is a colourful community initiative with a powerful purpose to raise awareness of domestic and family violence and show that our community stands united against abuse.
An initiative of Blacktown City Council’s Women’s Advisory Committee, the project brings together knitters, crocheters, community groups, local organisations and volunteers of all ages and abilities.
Throughout the year, community members create colourful knitted and crocheted strips, squares, flowers and pom poms. These pieces are joined together and used to transform public spaces across Blacktown City during the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, held from 25 November to 10 December.
Every stitch helps start an important conversation.
Creativity with purpose
The Knit Bomb Project is more than a colourful public display. It creates visible reminders that:
- domestic and family violence is never acceptable
- victim-survivors are not alone
- support is available
- everyone has a role in creating a safer and more respectful community.
The completed installations wrap trees, poles, benches, sculptures and other public spaces in colour, care and solidarity.
Community-created artworks
Since 2021, Parklea Correctional Centre has partnered with Council to create a unique artwork for the project each year. These pieces have included a giant teapot and teacups, a safe house, a family sculpture and animal sculptures.
The artworks are decorated with knitted and crocheted pieces created by the community, becoming powerful visual conversation starters about domestic and family violence. The partnership also provides participating inmates with an opportunity to use their skills, contribute to the community and support an important awareness campaign.
In 2025, Blacktown Area Community Centres – BACCand the Blacktown Women’s Shed created and donated a Purple Chair for the project.
The Purple Chair Project raises awareness of domestic and family violence while helping connect community members with support services through QR codes displayed on each chair. The chairs also provide a place to pause, reflect and remember those whose lives have been impacted or lost to domestic and family violence.
About the Purple Chair Project: The Purple Chair Project, led by Blacktown Area Community Centres (BACC) and the Blacktown Women’s Shed, uses painted purple chairs and/or benches displayed in community spaces to raise awareness of domestic and family violence. Each chair includes QR codes that connect people directly to support services, offering a place to pause, reflect and access help when needed.
From installations to blankets
When the public installations are taken down, the care and creativity behind them continues to live on. Knitted and crocheted pieces are professionally cleaned and repurposed into warm blankets, which are then donated to local women’s services, refuges, hospitals, nursing homes and community organisations to support people in need.
In the spirit of making sure every contribution is valued, any yarn or pieces that are damaged or unable to be turned into blankets are lovingly repurposed into cat blankets and donated to BARC (Blacktown Animal Rehoming Centre), helping to provide comfort for animals in care.
This means every stitch continues to bring warmth, comfort and kindness—no matter where it ends up.
Get involved
Whether you are an experienced knitter or crocheter, a complete beginner or simply looking for a meaningful way to contribute, everyone is welcome.
You can:
- attend one of our welcoming Yarn-In gatherings
- knit or crochet from home
- contribute strips, squares or flowers
- donate suitable yarn (8ply preferred)
- encourage your community group, school, workplace or organisation to participate
- attend the annual Knit Bomb Project launch in the Village Green.
